Sebastien Pilote

For Saguenay director Sébastien Pilote, 2007 was a pretty good year. He was well-rewarded in Canada and foreign countries for his last film, Dust Bowl Ha! Ha!, and we think he's the perfect person to direct the 12th edition of the improv film. Have fun, Sébastien!

Vite fait ou improvisé

"I already directed an improv film at the Festival Off-Courts in Trouville-sur-Mer. They had asked us to film it in 48 hours, like they did in Normandy. I had a great time. Several French actors and director Jean-François Rivard participated in the film - it was amazing! Since then, Off-Courts has been holding this event every year - and Jean-François never acted in Normandy again!

I think there are several different ways to approach improv film, and one route you can take is asking the public to provide rules and restrictions in order to bang out a quick script before starting to film. You could say that it's basically writing and filming something that we could have done more slowly if life were easier - but it's not like that for me. On the other hand, the project becomes really interesting if you just film without any sort of script, allowing the actors to improvise according to the situation. I think improv allows us to create scenarios that we would never have thought of before - improvisation is writing the script, with a little bit of fatigue thrown in there. That's the difference between a film that was filmed quickly and a truly improvised film."
